I have taught plenty of students at higher levels struggling with the basics. That’s why we created this song so that you won’t have any problem asking where someone is from. In my opinion what is most important is that German learners master the basics. The phrase “Woher kommst du?” is part of very basic German usually learned in the first few German lessons of any German teacher. We do not go into conjugations for now. Just remember how to answer the question “Woher kommst du?”
E.g.: “Woher kommst du?” – “Ich komme aus Deutschland”.
“Woher kommst du” – “Ich komme aus China”.
You can answer with a city or a country. The answer depends on how specific you wanna be. In spoken German we often omit the “e” at for verbs when the pronoun is “Ich”. You can say
“Ich komme aus Berlin”
but you can also say
“Ich komm aus Berlin”.
In the written language you would or even should write it the correct way which would be “Ich komme aus Berlin” but when you talk with your friends on social media or face to face then the simple version “Ich komm aus Berlin” is just fine.
You can practice your pronunciation by reading and singing along. After playing the song a few times you will very likely master the question “Where are you from?” in German. Enjoy!
